Cahokia Mounds: See Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

Explore the ancient Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site on a day trip and uncover the mysteries of this fascinating archaeological wonder.

One of the greatest cities of the world, Cahokia was larger than London in 1250 AD. Today, the remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric indigenous civilization north of Mexico are preserved at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site . Within the 2,200-acre tract, located right across the river from St. Louis, lie the archaeological remnants of the central section of the ancient settlement. Of the 2,200 acres, 800 are accessible to the public.

No trip to the Midwest is complete without exploring the site, climbing the 100-foot Monks Mound and experiencing the reconstructed ancient sun calendar known as Woodhenge.
